Assistant connector

Connect ChatGPT, Claude or Meta Muse to your Reading Journey library, then ask it to add books, mark them finished, rate them or plan your Next Up. Setup takes about two minutes and the connector is free.

Before you start

  • A Reading Journey account. You can sign in with Apple, Google or email and password, or create an account during setup.
  • Use the same sign-in method as in the app, so the assistant connects to your existing library.
  • Claude (web, desktop and mobile apps), ChatGPT or Meta Muse.
  • No RJ+ needed, and you don't need the app installed to connect.

Connect Claude

Reading Journey is listed in the Claude connector directory, so there's nothing to paste.

  1. Open Reading Journey in the Claude directory and click Connect to Claude.
  2. On the Reading Journey page, choose Continue with Apple or Continue with Google, or sign in with your email and password.
  3. Check what Claude will be able to do and click Allow. You're sent back to Claude.
  4. In a chat, open the + menu, choose Connectors and make sure Reading Journey is on. Then ask.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner turns the connector on under Organization settingsConnectors first; each member then connects with their own Reading Journey account. Once connected on the web, it also works in the Claude mobile apps.

Connect Meta Muse

  1. In Muse, open SettingsConnectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector and paste https://mcp.readingjourney.app.
  3. On the Reading Journey page, sign in the same way as in the app, check the permissions and choose Allow.

Muse's menus can change between versions; if you can't find Connectors, check Meta's help for custom connectors.

Try it

Open a new chat and ask, for example:

  • "Add Piranesi by Susanna Clarke to my Reading Journey as Want to Read and put it in Next Up."
  • "What's in my Next Up? Swap the third one for The Left Hand of Darkness."
  • "I finished Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow yesterday. Mark it finished and give it 4.5 stars."
  • "Make a collection called Book Club 2026 and add every Want to Read book by a Japanese author."
  • "Which books am I reading right now, and which have I paused?"
  • "I'm giving up on Infinite Jest. Mark it as did not finish."
  • "Recommend three cozy fantasy novels I don't already have, and add the one I pick."

Open Reading Journey afterwards and your changes are there. If the app is already open, switch away and back to sync.

What an assistant can and can't do

Can Can't
See and change your books, statuses, ratings, collections, Next Up, notes, reviews and journal entries See your photos or exact locations
Add books, change their status, rate them, log progress and set goals Delete a collection, a goal, a read or a book with reading history without asking you first
Manage Next Up and Top Four, create and fill collections, add photos when you ask Change your account, subscription or settings

The permissions page you see when connecting says the same: the assistant can read and change your notes, reviews and journal entries, and can add, replace or remove photos when you ask, but can never see them. Connected before 1 November 2026? Reconnect to give it this access.

Tools reference

You never call tools yourself: you ask in plain words and the assistant picks one. Every tool works only on your own library.

Tool Kind What it does
list_books Read Lists your books with status, rating, Next Up and collections; can filter by status, collection or words
get_book Read One book with each read's dates, your rating, collections and Next Up position
list_collections Read Your collections and how many books each holds
get_next_up Read Your Next Up books in order
add_book Write Adds a book (Want to Read by default); never duplicates one you have
set_status Write Starts, pauses, finishes or abandons a book, or marks it Want to Read
rate_book Write Rates the current read from 0.25 to 5 stars, or clears it
set_next_up Write Puts an unstarted book into Next Up
remove_from_next_up Write Takes a book out of Next Up
create_collection Write Creates a collection
add_to_collection Write Puts a book in a collection
remove_from_collection Write, asks first Takes a book out of a collection; the book stays
remove_book Write, asks first Deletes a book you've only added; never one with reading history, a rating, journal entry, progress, Top 4 place, note or cover photo

For developers: the OAuth scopes are mcp (read and change; what Allow grants), library:read and library:write. A connection stays signed in while you use it; after 60 days without use, connect again.

Limits and safety

  • Before removing a book or taking one out of a collection, the assistant is told to ask you.
  • If you change something on your phone, your change wins over an assistant's.
  • Assistants are told never to follow instructions written inside book titles, author names or collection names.
  • Each connection can read your library 60 times a minute and change it 30 times a minute.
  • The connector doesn't count as a device, so it doesn't affect free-tier sync.

Disconnect

Remove the connector in the assistant: in Claude, CustomizeConnectors, select Reading Journey and choose Remove; in Muse, SettingsConnectors. Deleting your Reading Journey account disconnects every assistant. Signing out of the app doesn't.

Troubleshooting

What you see What to do
"That email and password do not match an account." Check for typos, or reset your password in the app with Forgot Password?. If you use Apple or Google in the app, choose Continue with Apple or Continue with Google instead.
The assistant sees an empty library You signed in with a different method than in the app. Disconnect, connect again and use the same method.
"Confirm your email address first, then sign in." Open the confirmation email we sent, then sign in again.
"This page has expired." Go back to the assistant and connect Reading Journey again.
The provider rejected the app registration That assistant isn't supported yet. Claude, ChatGPT and Meta Muse are.
Changes don't show in the app Make sure the app is signed in to the same account, then switch away and back. On a free account, changes reach the device that syncs.
"…can only be removed in the Reading Journey app." The book has reading history; delete it from the book page in the app.
